Mutare sits in a narrow valley ringed by low mountains at the edge of Zimbabwe’s Eastern Highlands, less than 10km from the Mozambique border. As Zimbabwe’s fourth-largest city, it has proper infrastructure - supermarkets, fuel, a hospital, reliable internet - and a pleasant climate at 1,100 metres elevation. What it lacks in major tourist attractions it compensates for with its position: no other city in Zimbabwe gives you this kind of access to mountain country in every direction.

Bvumba Botanical Gardens

The Bvumba Botanical Gardens are the single best site in the greater Mutare area. Located 15km from the city centre in the Bvumba Mountains at around 1,700 metres, the gardens spread across a forested hillside with views over the mountains into Mozambique. The collection includes indigenous trees and shrubs, ornamental plantings, a series of ponds and streams, and well-maintained walking paths through the forest.

Entry costs approximately USD 5 per person. The gardens are open daily from 08:00 to 17:00. The adjacent Bunga Forest Botanical Reserve is a fragment of montane forest with bird species not found in the lowlands - the sombre greenbul, chirinda apalis, and Roberts’ warbler are among the specialities. Birders should visit early morning (07:00–10:00) for the highest activity.

Allow 2–3 hours for a full circuit of the gardens and Bunga Forest. The Bvumba road from Mutare is tarred and accessible in a normal car. The White Horse Inn, approximately 5km beyond the gardens, is a good stop for lunch.

Mutare Museum

The Mutare Museum on Aerodrome Road is one of the better provincial museums in Zimbabwe, covering natural history, ethnography, and local colonial and cultural history. The natural history section has a strong collection of Eastern Highlands bird and mammal specimens; the transport exhibit includes early motor vehicles and a narrow-gauge railway engine from the Beira–Mutare line.

The fine art gallery adjacent to the main museum hosts rotating exhibitions of Zimbabwean contemporary art. Entry is approximately USD 3–5 per person; allow 1.5–2 hours. The museum is well-maintained and the natural history section alone justifies the visit for anyone with an interest in the diversity of the Eastern Highlands ecosystem.

Murahwa Hill Nature Reserve

Murahwa Hill is a rocky, forested hill within Mutare’s city boundaries with a walking trail to the summit and reliable wildlife sightings for such an urban location. Leopard are present but rarely seen; baboon troops are permanent residents and remarkably habituated to visitors. Klipspringer, rock hyrax, and various small antelope species can be spotted on the rocky slopes.

The climb to the summit takes approximately 45 minutes and provides good views over Mutare and the surrounding hills. Entry is included with the Mutare Museum fee (joint ticket). The reserve opens at 08:00; mornings and late afternoons are best for wildlife. Wear closed shoes - the path is rocky.

La Rochelle Garden and Arboretum

La Rochelle is an estate 10km from Mutare on the road toward Nyanga, now managed as a public garden and arboretum. The grounds were originally laid out in the early 20th century and contain a collection of trees and ornamental plants that includes many species exotic to Zimbabwe. The garden is a peaceful walking environment and less visited than Bvumba, making it a good option when the Bvumba gardens are crowded on weekends.

Entry is approximately USD 3–5 per person. The farmhouse on the estate operates as a tea garden on weekends.

Christmas Pass Viewpoint

The mountain pass on the Harare–Mutare road, known as Christmas Pass, is one of the most scenic approach roads in Zimbabwe. As you drive down into Mutare from the west, the pass drops steeply through rocky, forested country before opening onto a panoramic view of the city in the valley below. A viewpoint layby at the top of the pass is worth stopping at for photographs, particularly in the late afternoon light.

Sakubva Market

Sakubva is the largest and busiest market in the Eastern Highlands region, a few kilometres from Mutare’s city centre. It sells fresh produce, clothing, hardware, cooked food, and a broad range of informal market goods. The atmosphere is vivid and entirely non-tourist. A walk through Sakubva market on a Saturday morning is one of the most genuine urban experiences available in Mutare.

Bring small denomination USD cash and be sensible about valuables - Sakubva is busy and lively, not dangerous, but a camera worn conspicuously or a phone held out draws attention. Go with a local contact or ask your hotel to recommend someone who can show you around if you are unfamiliar with large African market environments.

Day Trips to the Eastern Highlands

Mutare is the natural base for the Eastern Highlands triangle: Bvumba (15km southwest), Nyanga National Park (90km north via Rusape and Juliasdale), and Chimanimani (260km south via Chipinge). Most visitors combine 2–3 nights in Mutare with day trips to Bvumba and potentially one longer excursion to Nyanga.

The road to Nyanga via Juliasdale passes through spectacular mountain scenery and the journey is as much the point as the destination. The Bvumba road is shorter and the mountains are dense with forest and good coffee estate scenery. Self-drive is the most flexible option; Mutare-based tour operators can arrange guided day excursions to any of the three areas.

Eastern Highlands Golf Club

Mutare has one of the better golf courses in Zimbabwe - the Eastern Highlands Golf Club, an 18-hole course set in the hills above the city. Green fees for visitors run approximately USD 20–40. The course has mountain views from several holes and is worth playing for golfers in the area.

Practical Notes

Mutare has reliable ATMs (ZiG and USD) in the city centre. Fuel is consistently available. The city has proper supermarkets (OK, Pick n Pay) stocked for long trips into the highlands where supplies are limited. Malaria risk in Mutare city itself is low due to the altitude; it increases if you travel down to lower-lying areas toward the Mozambique border. Book accommodation in Mutare before arriving - good mid-range properties fill quickly over Zimbabwean school holidays. Car hire from Harare gives you the flexibility to stop along the highlands route. Travel insurance is advisable if you are planning hiking days in the mountains, and a Zimbabwe eSIM covers connectivity across the Eastern Highlands corridor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Mutare worth visiting or just a gateway city?
Both - Mutare has enough in the city itself to justify half a day or a full day of exploration (museum, botanical gardens, Murahwa Hill, Sakubva Market). But the reason most visitors come is the Eastern Highlands: Bvumba Mountains, Nyanga National Park, and Chimanimani are all within 1–3 hours. Mutare works best as a comfortable base with good food and accommodation for 2–4 nights while you explore the highlands around it.
How far is Mutare from Harare?
Mutare is 263km east of Harare - approximately 3 hours on the Beit Bridge road via Rusape. The road is tarred for its entire length. The approach to Mutare through Christmas Pass is one of the most scenic road entries to any city in Zimbabwe - the mountain pass drops you down into the valley with the city laid out below. A domestic coach service (Pathfinder, Intercape) runs the Harare–Mutare route for approximately USD 10–15 per person.
What is the best day trip from Mutare?
The Bvumba Mountains are the best half-day from Mutare. Drive the 15km from the city to the Bvumba Botanical Gardens, continue to Bunga Forest Botanical Reserve for birdwatching, and finish with lunch or afternoon tea at White Horse Inn. For a full day, Nyanga National Park (2.5 hours north) gives you Mount Nyangani, trout fishing, and waterfalls. Chimanimani (4 hours south) is best as a 2-night trip rather than a day excursion.
