Zimbabwe at a Glance
Victoria Falls dominates the visitor itinerary for good reason. The falls are roughly twice the height of Niagara and span 1,708 metres across the Zambezi. The spray is visible from 50 kilometres away during peak flow. Entry to the Victoria Falls National Park costs USD 30 per person and the walk along the rainforest path takes one to two hours. The falls can be visited from the Zimbabwe side (better viewpoints) or the Zambia side (better access for swimming at the Devil's Pool in low water season). Most visitors combine both with a KAZA UNIVISA.
Wildlife safaris are the second anchor experience. Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe's largest, sits four hours from Victoria Falls and is the most accessible Big Five destination. Mana Pools on the Zambezi offers walking safaris and canoe trips that are among the most immersive wildlife experiences anywhere in Africa. Gonarezhou in the southeast is remote and off the main tourist trail, with large elephant populations and near-zero crowds. Safari costs range from approximately USD 150 to 200 per person per day for budget camping packages to USD 600 and above for fully inclusive private lodge experiences.
Great Zimbabwe, near the town of Masvingo, is the largest ancient stone structure in sub-Saharan Africa and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry costs USD 15 per person. The site is the origin of Zimbabwe's name, meaning "great stone houses" in Shona. Walking the Great Enclosure and the Hill Complex takes two to three hours with a guide. The site museum is small but informative. Great Zimbabwe is approximately four hours from Harare and five from Bulawayo.
The Eastern Highlands offer a completely different experience from the rest of Zimbabwe. Chimanimani, Nyanga, and the Vumba Mountains have cooler temperatures, dramatic mountain landscapes, tea plantations, and multi-day trekking routes. Chimanimani National Park entry is USD 15 per day; the trailhead is at the Mutekeswayne Gate. This region is best from April to October and is particularly good for birding, with over 300 species recorded in Chimanimani alone.
Bulawayo and Matobo Hills form a natural pairing. Zimbabwe's second city has colonial-era architecture, a strong craft and arts scene, and the Bulawayo Natural History Museum (entry USD 5). Matobo Hills, 35km south of the city, is where you find white and black rhino on foot, San rock art galleries, and Cecil Rhodes's grave at World's View. Most visitors base themselves in Bulawayo and take a half-day or full-day trip to Matobo. Game drives in the park start at approximately USD 50 per person; guided rhino tracking costs USD 30 to 50 extra.
Lake Kariba, 280km long and created by the Kariba Dam, is the setting for houseboat safaris, tiger fishing, and sunset cruises. The lake town of Kariba is five hours from Harare. Houseboat hire with a crew starts at around USD 200 to 300 per night for a small vessel; fully crewed, catered houseboats for groups cost USD 500 and above per night. Tiger fishing charters run USD 100 to 150 per day. The lake backdrop at sunset, with baobab trees silhouetted against the water, is one of Zimbabwe's best photographic opportunities.
