The helicopter flight over Victoria Falls is one of the most requested experiences in southern Africa, and for good reason. From the air, the full scale of the world’s largest waterfall becomes apparent in a way that ground-level viewing never achieves: the 1,708-metre-wide curtain of water crashing 108 metres into Batoka Gorge, plumes of spray rising 400 metres, and the snaking gorge cutting through the basalt plateau all the way to the horizon. Known locally as the “Flight of Angels” — a name lifted from David Livingstone’s 1855 description — a 12-minute helicopter ride costs less than a restaurant meal in London and delivers an experience that stays with most people for life.

The Two Main Operators

Batoka Sky

The dominant operator and widely regarded as the best. Batoka Sky has been operating helicopter tours over Victoria Falls since 1994 and runs a modern fleet of Robinson R44 and Bell JetRanger aircraft from its helipad near the Victoria Falls Hotel on the Zimbabwe side.

  • 12-minute “Flight of Angels” (FoA): USD 145–165 per person (prices as of 2026, subject to change)
  • 25-minute extended flight (Full Circuit): USD 290–330 per person — adds the Zambezi upstream, Zambezi National Park elephant herds, and the Batoka Gorge rapids
  • 30-minute Ultimate Circuit: USD 350–410 per person — maximum coverage including Songwe Gorge

Batoka Sky can accommodate 3 passengers per flight. Booking directly through their Victoria Falls office typically saves 5–10% versus booking through hotels.

Shearwater Helicopters

The second major operator, also departing from the Zimbabwe side. Shearwater runs a similar product at comparable pricing, generally within USD 10–20 of Batoka Sky rates. Shearwater is part of the larger Shearwater Adventures group that dominates Victoria Falls activity booking, so they are easy to add to a multi-activity package with discounts.

  • 12-minute flight: approximately USD 155–175 per person
  • 25-minute flight: approximately USD 295–345 per person

Operators on the Zambia side (Livingstone) also offer helicopter tours but typically at slightly higher prices due to Zambia’s USD-based pricing structure. The views are the same regardless of which side you depart from.

12-Minute vs. 25-Minute: Which to Choose

The 12-minute flight covers the falls themselves and the immediate gorge — more than sufficient for photos and a genuine appreciation of the scale. The 25-minute flight adds:

  • Upstream Zambezi: active wildlife viewing from the air including elephant herds on the river islands
  • Batoka Gorge: a spectacular narrow slot canyon downstream
  • Zambezi National Park boundary

For first-time visitors, the 12-minute flight is excellent value. If you plan to do a sunset cruise on the Zambezi (which views the falls from water level) AND the helicopter, the 12-minute version avoids duplication. If the helicopter is your only Victoria Falls aerial experience, the 25-minute circuit is worth the extra spend.

Best Season for Helicopter Flights

February to June (peak flood): The Zambezi runs at maximum volume and the spray plumes are enormous — in some conditions reaching 400–500 metres above the gorge rim. Photos will include dramatic mist and spray effects. On overcast days, visibility into the gorge can be limited by spray. This is the “most powerful” option visually.

July to October (low water, dry season): Spray reduces significantly after August, allowing unobstructed views directly into the gorge and of the individual falls curtains. In October, portions of the falls may slow to a trickle, but the basalt formations and gorge walls become fully visible. October is also ideal for photography — clear skies, soft light, sharp colours.

Most helicopter operators consider August and September the best months: the falls still carry substantial water, spray is manageable, and the light is excellent in the morning.

Morning flights (7am–9am) tend to produce the best light and minimal wind. Afternoon flights can have stronger thermal turbulence, particularly from November to April.

What to Expect on the Day

Bookings are confirmed with a deposit (typically 50%). Report to the helipad 20 minutes before your scheduled flight time. A safety briefing covers: how to board, seatbelt operation, and prohibition on opening windows during flight.

Weight limits apply. The Robinson R44 has a combined passenger weight limit of approximately 300kg for three passengers. If your group exceeds this, you may be asked to fly in separate groups or switch to the Bell JetRanger (6 seats, higher capacity, slightly different viewing angle).

Photography: Bring a wide-angle lens if possible — the gorge is vast. Camera phones perform well. Operators instruct passengers not to lean cameras out of windows. Ask for a window seat when booking; middle passengers have limited photography angles.

Duration from hotel to hotel: Allow 2–3 hours including transfers to the helipad, check-in, briefing, flight, and return.

What Is Included

  • Transfer from Victoria Falls town centre (hotel pickups available with most operators for a small fee)
  • Safety briefing
  • 12 or 25 minutes of flight time over the falls and gorge
  • Certificate of completion (some operators)

Not included: Third-party photography packages (some operators offer an on-board photographer add-on for approximately USD 50), meals, gratuities to ground crew.

Booking Advice

Book 24–48 hours in advance during peak season (July–September). Last-minute booking is usually possible in April–June outside school holidays. GetYourGuide and the operator’s own websites are the main booking channels; prices are consistent. If you book through your lodge, expect a 15–20% markup on the base rate.

Helicopter flights do not operate in heavy rain or sustained winds above 30 knots. Cancellations due to weather are fully refunded and rebooked at the next available slot.

The Flight of Angels is not a gimmick. It is, for most people who take it, the single most memorable 12 minutes of their Zimbabwe trip. Even visitors who have seen Victoria Falls from the ground consistently say the aerial perspective is a fundamentally different experience. If budget allows for only one paid activity in Victoria Falls, make it this one.
