Vegan Zimbabwe: Plant-Based Food Guide

Zimbabwe is a meat-heavy food culture, but vegan eating is more manageable than it first appears. Several traditional dishes are naturally plant-based: sadza with muriwo (cooked greens), sadza with dovi (peanut butter stew without meat), roasted maize, and various bean and pumpkin dishes. Peanut butter is a core ingredient in Zimbabwean cooking and appears in greens, stews, and relishes. Harare has a small but growing health-food and vegetarian restaurant scene, particularly in the Avondale and Borrowdale areas. Outside the cities, communicating "no meat, no dairy" requires clear explanation, but cooks are generally willing to accommodate. Safari lodges typically handle dietary requirements well if notified in advance.
