The Victoria Falls Bridge was completed in 1905, a year after the falls were first documented by a European explorer, and was originally designed to allow Cecil Rhodes’ Cape-to-Cairo railway to cross the Zambezi. Today the bridge is better known as one of Africa’s great adventure platforms — a 111-metre drop above a surging gorge, framed by spray and the distant roar of the falls. Bungee jumping here is a rite of passage for a certain type of traveller.

The Bridge and the Jump

The Victoria Falls Bridge spans the Second Gorge of the Zambezi River, connecting Zimbabwe and Zambia at one of the narrowest points of the gorge. When you stand at the centre of the bridge and look down, you’re looking at 111 metres of air between your feet and the river surface — the Zambezi surging below in a series of churning rapids.

The bungee jump takes place from a specially constructed platform attached to the bridge’s centre section. After a brief safety briefing and harness fitting, jumpers are secured with ankle cuffs and a body harness. The jump is face-forward, looking out across the gorge rather than straight down. The freefall lasts approximately three seconds before the cord engages, followed by two or three large bounces. You’re then lowered to the platform level or, in some configurations, clipped onto a separate line and guided back to the platform by staff below.

The jump takes about 30 seconds from the moment you leave the platform. Preparation, briefing, and waiting typically takes 30–45 minutes depending on the queue. The whole experience — signing in, briefing, jump, recovery, certificate — runs about 1.5 to 2 hours.

Who Operates It

The jump is managed by African Extreme, which operates under a concession from Shearwater Adventures, one of Victoria Falls’ largest activity operators. You can book directly at the bridge, at Shearwater’s main booking office in Victoria Falls town (on Park Way), or through your hotel activities desk. Walk-up bookings are accepted on the day if space is available, but booking 24 hours ahead is recommended during peak season (July–August). You can also compare the bungee jump alongside other Victoria Falls waterfall activities on GetYourGuide to bundle with other gorge experiences.

Approximate prices as of 2026:

  • Bungee jump — USD 160
  • Gorge swing — USD 115
  • Bridge zip line — USD 55
  • Combo (bungee + gorge swing) — approximately USD 240
  • Combo (all three activities) — approximately USD 280

Prices are charged in USD; card payment is accepted. Photos and video of your jump are sold separately — usually USD 25–40 for a photo package or around USD 50 for video.

Other Bridge Activities

The bungee jump is the headliner, but three other experiences share the same bridge platform.

The Gorge Swing is, for many people, the better experience. Rather than a vertical drop, this involves a pendulum swing — you freefall briefly before the cord pulls you into a wide arc across the gorge. The gorge swing lasts longer and the visual experience of flying horizontally across the canyon is spectacular. It’s slightly cheaper than the bungee and can be done tandem (two people swinging simultaneously at a higher per-person cost).

The Zipline strings a cable across the gorge from the Zimbabwe side to the Zambian side. Participants descend face-forward in a harness at speeds up to 100km/h, with the river below and the mist of the falls drifting across the gorge. The zipline is the least physically intimidating of the three options and is well-suited to those who want the views without the extreme drop.

The Bridge Walk is a guided tour along the outside structure of the bridge — walking on the steel frame rather than the roadway, secured by a harness. This is the gentlest option and focuses more on history and views than adrenaline. It takes approximately one hour and costs around USD 30.

Getting to the Bridge

From Victoria Falls town, the bridge is reachable on foot in about 15–20 minutes via the main park road. Most hotels can arrange a transfer. You pass through the National Park entrance (pay the standard park fee of approximately USD 30 for foreign visitors as of 2026 — this is a park entry fee, not an activity fee). The bridge itself sits on the Zimbabwe-Zambia border, so technically you’re crossing into an international border zone; no separate visa is required just to visit the bridge.

If you’re arriving from the Zambian side (Livingstone), the approach is almost identical but you enter via the Zambian Customs post.

Practical Considerations

Weight limits: 40kg minimum, 145kg maximum. Both are enforced strictly. If you’re unsure, weigh yourself beforehand.

Medical conditions: Anyone with heart conditions, high blood pressure, epilepsy, back or neck injuries, or who is pregnant should not jump. A declaration form is signed before the activity. We also recommend arranging travel insurance for Zimbabwe before any adventure activity — standard policies often exclude extreme sports unless specifically listed.

What to wear: Comfortable, fitted clothing is best. Loose items can slip upwards during the jump. Secure any glasses or sunglasses.

Photography: Your own camera or phone can be taken to the observation area but not onto the jump platform itself. Official photographers and videographers are on-site.

Best time of day: Mornings (before 10:00) offer the best light for photography with fewer queues. Afternoons can be busy in high season. The bridge operates from approximately 08:00 to 17:00 daily, weather permitting.

Combining with other activities: Many visitors pair bridge activities with a half-day rafting trip in the morning and the bungee jump in the afternoon. Alternatively, a sunrise helicopter flight over the falls followed by the bridge activities makes an intense Victoria Falls day.

What It Actually Feels Like

The approach to the bridge is unremarkable — it’s a standard road bridge wide enough for vehicles, with a pedestrian footpath on either side. You’ll hear the falls before you see them. The gorge opens beneath you gradually as you walk toward the centre, and by the time you reach the jump platform, the scale of what you’re about to do becomes apparent.

Most people describe the three seconds of freefall as the longest three seconds of their life. The rushing air, the gorge walls racing past, and the distant glint of the river below combine into a sensory overload that ends abruptly when the cord engages. The first bounce brings you back up high enough to see the falls themselves — a brief, suspended moment before the cord pulls you down again.

After the final bounces, you’re lowered to a holding platform below the bridge roadway where staff remove the harness. Many people stand quietly for a few minutes before speaking. Others immediately ask to go again.
