Victoria Falls Oct 2026: Zambezi Rapids Open for Rafting

October is the best month of the year for white water rafting at Victoria Falls, with the Zambezi River at its annual low-water mark and all 23 commercial rapids from the Boiling Pot to Ghostrider open for operations. Rafting companies on both the Zimbabwe and Zambia sides are reporting full days with clear skies and water temperatures around 22 to 24 degrees Celsius.

What the Water Conditions Mean

The Zambezi floods between February and June, closing the upper section of the gorge and reducing rafting to the lower rapids below rapid 11. By October, the river has dropped enough to expose the technical upper rapids β€” including the famous rapid 5 (Stairway to Heaven) and rapid 9 (Commercial Suicide) β€” and operators run full-day trips covering all 23 sections of the 25-kilometre gorge.

This year’s water level is tracking slightly below the 10-year average, which guides describe as ideal: β€œenough water to make the rapids exciting but not so much that they lose their shape,” according to one Shearwater Adventures guide operating from Livingstone Island.

Pricing and Operators

Full-day white water rafting trips (all 23 rapids) run approximately USD 150 to 175 per person from the Zimbabwe side, including transfers from Victoria Falls town and lunch at the river. Half-day options (rapids 1 to 9) are available from around USD 90.

Key operators:

  • Shearwater Adventures: full day from USD 165, departures at 07:30 and 12:00
  • Wildside Zimbabwe: full day from USD 150, small groups maximum 8 per raft
  • Safari Par Excellence: also runs from the Zambia side if you hold a dual-entry visa

Other October Activities at the Falls

Beyond rafting, October is excellent for game viewing in Hwange National Park just 100 kilometres east, where elephant herds congregate at pump-fed waterholes in massive numbers. The combination of Victoria Falls and Hwange is the most popular Zimbabwe itinerary and makes full use of October’s dry conditions.

Victoria Falls at low water still produces impressive spray, though the Zambian side offers fuller views in October when Zimbabwe’s eastern cataract shows exposed rock. Sunset helicopter flights are operating daily and are a popular complement to a rafting day.

Bungee jumping (111 metres from the Victoria Falls Bridge) and zip-lining over the gorge are also at capacity most days in October β€” advance booking of at least two days is advisable during school holiday periods.
