Airlink Increases Harare–Johannesburg Flights to Daily Service

South African regional carrier Airlink has confirmed daily service on the Harare–Johannesburg route effective 1 July 2026, upgrading from a five-times-weekly schedule that had been in place since 2023. The move makes OR Tambo International a more practical connection hub for travellers routing into Zimbabwe from Europe, the Americas, and the rest of Africa.

The Route and Schedule

Airlink operates the route using 50-seat Embraer ERJ-135/140 aircraft. The new daily schedule offers a morning departure from Harare (HRE) arriving into Johannesburg (JNB) in time for long-haul afternoon connections, and an afternoon departure from JNB arriving Harare before sunset. Travel time is approximately 90 minutes.

Fares at the time of reporting start from approximately USD 140 one-way in economy, though prices fluctuate significantly with booking lead time and demand. OR Tambo connections to European hubs are available via South African Airways, British Airways (as Comair), Qatar Airways, and Ethiopian Airlines, among others.

Harare has historically been underserved relative to the traffic volume that passes through OR Tambo, with many travellers forced to route via Nairobi (Kenya Airways) or Addis Ababa (Ethiopian Airlines) to access flights at competitive prices. The daily Airlink service provides a more direct southern Africa regional option, particularly for travellers already visiting South Africa as part of a broader itinerary.

Tourism officials in Harare have noted that improved air access is critical to the city’s ambition to position itself as a gateway for regional safari circuits combining Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Zambia. The timing aligns with peak pre-season demand: travellers booking July–October safari trips - the dry season prime window for wildlife viewing at Hwange and Mana Pools - benefit from more scheduling flexibility when the daily flight is full.
