Victoria Falls Airport Transfer: Taxis, Shuttles & Private Transfers

Victoria Falls Airport (VFA) serves one of Africa’s most visited natural wonders. The terminal is small and easy to navigate - you will clear customs, collect luggage, and be outside in under 30 minutes on most flights. From there, the decision is simply how you want to cover the 22 km into town.

Distance and Journey Time

The airport lies south-east of Victoria Falls town along the Bulawayo road (B8). Under normal conditions the drive takes 20–30 minutes. There is very little traffic on this route outside of tourist peak seasons (July–October), so delays are uncommon. The road is paved and well maintained for the full 22 km.

Option 1 - Pre-Booked Private Transfer

Booking a dedicated vehicle before you fly is the smoothest option at Victoria Falls. With high-value safari items in your luggage and a waterfall visit likely on your first afternoon, the last thing you want is to haggle outside arrivals.

• Fixed USD price - confirmed before travel
• Often includes a brief orientation from the driver on what to expect in town

Book at least 24 hours before arrival. Pre-booked transfers are especially important if you arrive in the evening - availability from unbooked taxis drops sharply after dusk.

Option 2 - Hotel Shuttle

Most lodges and mid-range hotels in Victoria Falls offer an airport shuttle. This is often the best-value option because:

• Many properties include it at no extra charge (confirm when booking)
• Drivers know the lodge and parking layout
• It counts as a first contact with your accommodation team

Typical cost if charged separately: USD 20–40 per vehicle. A few budget guesthouses charge per person (USD 10–15).

Contact your hotel directly when making your reservation. Give them your flight number and arrival time - most will hold the shuttle if your flight is delayed.

Option 3 - Negotiated Taxi

A small queue of taxis waits outside the arrivals exit. Drivers operate on flat-rate negotiated prices. Unlike city airports, there are no ride-hailing apps with meaningful coverage in Victoria Falls - you are dealing directly with a driver.

Fair rates to aim for (2026):

• Airport to town centre: USD 25–35
• Airport to Victoria Falls National Park gate: USD 30–40
• Airport to the Zambia border bridge: USD 35–45

Tips for negotiating:

• Confirm the currency is USD before anything else
• Ask if the price is for the whole vehicle (it usually is, but verify)
• The first number offered is almost always negotiable - a polite counter of 20–30% below their opening is standard

If multiple passengers are travelling, taxis can work out similar cost to a pre-booked transfer with the added flexibility of choosing your pick-up point on the day.

Option 4 - Shared Transfer

Some operators run shared transfer vehicles that collect passengers from the same flight and drop off at multiple accommodation addresses in sequence. Cost per person is lower - typically USD 10–20 - but journey time is longer due to the multiple stops.

Ask at the arrivals desk or look for operators with boards offering “shared transfer” services. This works well if your hotel is in the main town and you are not in a hurry.

Arriving After Dark

International charter flights and some regional connections arrive in the evening. After dark, stick to pre-booked or hotel transfers. The road to town is well maintained but there is no street lighting for most of the route. Avoid unregistered vehicles that may approach you in the car park.

Cross-Border Transfers

Victoria Falls is a natural base for crossing into Zambia (Livingstone) or Botswana (Kasane / Chobe). If you are connecting to a safari on arrival day, a pre-booked cross-border transfer avoids the need to change vehicles at the border.

Key border crossings from VFA:

• Victoria Falls Bridge → Livingstone, Zambia: Around 10 km from town. Zambia visas on arrival for most nationalities. KAZA UniVisa available if you plan to visit both countries.
• Kazungula → Kasane, Botswana: Approximately 70 km from Victoria Falls town. Ferry crossing (now replaced by the Kazungula Bridge). Most operators charge a supplementary border crossing fee.

Car Hire at Victoria Falls Airport

Europcar and a handful of local operators have desks in the terminal. Hiring from the airport and driving yourself gives maximum flexibility, particularly if you are heading to Hwange National Park (about 100 km to the east).

Note that some national park access roads require a 4×4 vehicle, especially in the green season (November–April). Check with your rental company before confirming a standard sedan.

Practical Arrival Tips

• Currency: USD is the default currency in Victoria Falls. Change a small amount at the airport bureau de change for tips and taxis - most town businesses accept USD cash.
• SIM card: Econet Wireless has a desk in the terminal. A local SIM with data is useful for WhatsApp contact with your lodge. Alternatively, set up a Zimbabwe eSIM from Airalo before you fly.
• Entry fees: If you plan to visit the falls on day one, note that entry to Victoria Falls National Park costs approximately USD 30 per person (2026). The park gate is about 2 km from the town centre.

Getting Around Victoria Falls Town

The town centre is compact - most hotels, restaurants, and the national park entrance gate are within 2 km of each other and walkable in daylight hours. The main strip along Livingstone Way has adventure tour operators, craft markets, and restaurants.
