Zimbabwe in December: Weather, Wildlife and What to Expect
December is Zimbabwe’s green season in full expression. The country that spent eight months in dry, tawny stillness erupts in lush growth almost overnight — mopane trees unfurl copper-coloured new leaves, seasonal rivers run, frogs call from every pool, and the bush fills with the calls of breeding and migrating birds. Victoria Falls begins its long build toward the April–May peak. For travellers seeking something other than a classic dry-season safari, December offers a genuinely different Zimbabwe experience at genuinely lower prices — except around the Christmas–New Year peak.
Weather in December
December is solidly in Zimbabwe’s rainy season. Rain falls on roughly 12–16 days in a typical December across most of the country, mostly concentrated in afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Mornings are often clear and sunny, and the landscape has a brightness and freshness that the dry season entirely lacks. Temperatures are warm but moderated by cloud cover and rainfall — significantly more comfortable than October’s extremes.
Humidity rises in the Zambezi Valley and around Victoria Falls, where the mist from the falls compounds the ambient moisture. The Highveld cities remain more comfortable.
| City | Avg High °C | Avg Low °C | Rain Days | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harare | 26 | 15 | 14 | Warm mornings, afternoon storms |
| Bulawayo | 28 | 16 | 12 | Hot, frequent afternoon rain |
| Victoria Falls | 30 | 18 | 12 | Hot, humid, heavy afternoon storms |
| Masvingo | 26 | 15 | 14 | Warm, green, frequent showers |
Victoria Falls Water Levels
December sees the Victoria Falls begin to recover from their October low. The Zambezi catchment in Zambia and Angola has been receiving rain since November, and this runoff reaches Victoria Falls progressively through December. By mid-December, the Main Falls section is running again with a continuous curtain of water. Spray begins to build, and the characteristic “smoke that thunders” — Mosi-oa-Tunya in the Tonga language — is audible from the town centre once more.
By late December, a rain poncho is necessary on the Rainforest Walk. The sight of the full falls in their greening context, with fresh vegetation on the gorge walls and a double rainbow in the afternoon light, is one of the finest versions of Victoria Falls to visit.
White water rafting is typically closed by December as the Zambezi gorge becomes too full for safe access to the lower rapids. Upper Zambezi flatwater canoeing and sunset cruises continue operating.
Safari and Wildlife
December game viewing requires adjusted expectations. The flush of new grass grows quickly to knee height and above, partially obscuring smaller predators and browsers. Animals are also no longer concentrated at waterholes — water is now everywhere, so they spread across the parks. This makes the numbers visible at any one waterhole considerably lower than in August–October.
What December does offer:
- Exceptional birdwatching — December is the zenith of Zimbabwe’s bird calendar. The full suite of migrants is present (they begin arriving in October–November), breeding plumage is at its most vivid, and nesting activity is at its peak. Mana Pools in December is extraordinary for birds: African skimmers nest on the exposed sandbanks, carmine bee-eaters return to their colonial nesting burrows, and the riverine forest holds concentrations of African broadbills, narina trogons, and trumpeter hornbills
- New-born antelope — Impala, kudu, and zebra give birth from December onwards, triggered by the nutritional flush of new grass. Watching a newborn impala take its first steps — while its mother attempts to keep it hidden from circling jackals — is a powerful wildlife moment exclusive to the wet season
- Dramatic photography — Green-season light is different from dry-season light. Dramatic storm clouds form the backdrop for landscape photography, and the fresh greens and reds of new vegetation create colourful, vivid images very different from the ochres and blacks of the dry season
- Lion and wild dog activity — Despite reduced visibility, lion and wild dog are actively hunting in the longer grass. Guides with strong tracking skills can deliver exceptional predator encounters; the challenge concentrates activity and increases the satisfaction when a sighting is earned
Malaria risk is high in December across all lowveld areas. Prophylaxis is mandatory, and DEET repellent should be applied at dawn and dusk without exception. Browse current Zimbabwe tours on GetYourGuide to find green-season specialist operators who know how to make the most of December conditions.
Events in December
- Christmas and New Year at Victoria Falls — Victoria Falls sees its busiest social calendar of the year in the last two weeks of December. The Victoria Falls Hotel hosts a formal Christmas dinner (approximately USD 75–100 per person as of 2026) and New Year’s Eve gala. The Boma at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge runs special festive menus with enhanced entertainment. Book any hotel stay in Victoria Falls for December 24–January 2 at least three months in advance — availability and pricing spike significantly
- Harare Christmas Market — Informal craft and food markets pop up at venues including Sam Levy’s Village (Borrowdale) and Avondale Shopping Centre through December. These offer Zimbabwean craft gifts, seasonal food, and live music at weekends
- Boxing Day cricket — The Harare Sports Club hosts domestic and sometimes international cricket fixtures over the festive period. Check Zimbabwe Cricket for fixtures; admission to domestic games costs approximately USD 3–5 as of 2026
Where to Stay and Eat
Victoria Falls: Despite being low season in most of the country, Victoria Falls commands near-peak pricing for Christmas week and New Year. The Elephant Camp (a luxury camp above the gorge operated by Wild Horizons) charges from approximately USD 600 per person per night in December’s festive window, including all meals and activities (as of 2026). Shearwater Explorers Village lodge tents offer better festive value from approximately USD 120 per person per night.
For food, Mama Africa Restaurant near the main curio market serves a popular Zimbabwe-meets-Africa menu of grilled game, sadza, and relishes. Main courses run approximately USD 12–18 (as of 2026). The Victoria Falls Hotel terrace is excellent for a late-morning coffee with gorge views after an early Rainforest Walk.
Harare: The Meikles Hotel in the central business district is Harare’s most storied hotel, offering rooms from approximately USD 150 per night in December. The hotel’s Lord Milner Restaurant has a Zimbabwean game menu alongside continental classics; a three-course dinner costs approximately USD 40–55 per person (as of 2026). The Avondale area (Gava’s, Café Nush, La Fontaine) is the most active restaurant strip for independent dining.
Bulawayo: The Bulawayo Rainbow Hotel, a large venue in the city centre, offers reliable double rooms from approximately USD 70 per night in December. From Bulawayo, Matobo Hills is a full-day excursion (40 km south) that rewards December visitors with lush granite balancing rocks framed by green vegetation — a striking contrast to the arid dry-season view.
What to Pack
December’s warm-and-wet conditions require practical preparation:
- A compact waterproof rain jacket that packs to a fist size — afternoon downpours arrive fast
- Quick-dry lightweight trousers and shirts — cotton stays wet; travel synthetics dry within the hour
- Waterproof sandals or trail shoes for camp paths and rainforest walks after rain
- Insect repellent with at least 30% DEET — malaria risk is at its highest from December onwards
- High-SPF sunscreen for sunny mornings, particularly at altitude on the Highveld
- Binoculars are more useful in December than at any other time of year for birdwatching
- A dry bag or waterproof case for cameras and phones on boat activities and the Rainforest Walk
- Headtorch with fresh batteries for navigating camp paths during evening power cuts during storms
Budget and Booking
Outside the Christmas–New Year spike (December 24–January 2), December offers the best value in Zimbabwe’s entire tourism calendar. Low-season rates at mid-range and luxury camps can represent 25–40% discounts from peak. Self-drive campers face the trade-off of potentially wet roads in remote parks, but the national parks campsites are significantly cheaper than dry-season equivalents.
For Christmas week specifically: book Victoria Falls accommodation a minimum of three to four months in advance. Prices for the festive window can match or exceed peak-safari-season rates.
Arrange travel insurance before departure — malaria risk peaks in December, and medical evacuation cover is essential across all lowveld and green-season safari areas.
