Zimbabwe in December: Weather, Wildlife and What to Expect

December is Zimbabwe’s green season in full expression. The country that spent eight months in dry, tawny stillness erupts in lush growth almost overnight — mopane trees unfurl copper-coloured new leaves, seasonal rivers run, frogs call from every pool, and the bush fills with the calls of breeding and migrating birds. Victoria Falls begins its long build toward the April–May peak. For travellers seeking something other than a classic dry-season safari, December offers a genuinely different Zimbabwe experience at genuinely lower prices — except around the Christmas–New Year peak.

Weather in December

December is solidly in Zimbabwe’s rainy season. Rain falls on roughly 12–16 days in a typical December across most of the country, mostly concentrated in afternoon and evening thunderstorms. Mornings are often clear and sunny, and the landscape has a brightness and freshness that the dry season entirely lacks. Temperatures are warm but moderated by cloud cover and rainfall — significantly more comfortable than October’s extremes.

Humidity rises in the Zambezi Valley and around Victoria Falls, where the mist from the falls compounds the ambient moisture. The Highveld cities remain more comfortable.

Victoria Falls Water Levels

December sees the Victoria Falls begin to recover from their October low. The Zambezi catchment in Zambia and Angola has been receiving rain since November, and this runoff reaches Victoria Falls progressively through December. By mid-December, the Main Falls section is running again with a continuous curtain of water. Spray begins to build, and the characteristic “smoke that thunders” — Mosi-oa-Tunya in the Tonga language — is audible from the town centre once more.

By late December, a rain poncho is necessary on the Rainforest Walk. The sight of the full falls in their greening context, with fresh vegetation on the gorge walls and a double rainbow in the afternoon light, is one of the finest versions of Victoria Falls to visit.

White water rafting is typically closed by December as the Zambezi gorge becomes too full for safe access to the lower rapids. Upper Zambezi flatwater canoeing and sunset cruises continue operating.

Safari and Wildlife

December game viewing requires adjusted expectations. The flush of new grass grows quickly to knee height and above, partially obscuring smaller predators and browsers. Animals are also no longer concentrated at waterholes — water is now everywhere, so they spread across the parks. • New-born antelope — Impala, kudu, and zebra give birth from December onwards, triggered by the nutritional flush of new grass. Watching a newborn impala take its first steps — while its mother attempts to keep it hidden from circling jackals — is a powerful wildlife moment exclusive to the wet season
• Dramatic photography — Green-season light is different from dry-season light. Dramatic storm clouds form the backdrop for landscape photography, and the fresh greens and reds of new vegetation create colourful, vivid images very different from the ochres and blacks of the dry season

Self-drive campers face the trade-off of potentially wet roads in remote parks, but the national parks campsites are significantly cheaper than dry-season equivalents.
