Hwange National Park covers 14,651 square kilometres — Zimbabwe’s largest park and one of the great elephant sanctuaries on the continent. With a population estimated at over 40,000 elephants, it offers some of the most reliable pachyderm viewing in Africa, particularly around the solar-powered waterholes that sustain wildlife through the dry season. How Hwange Accommodation Works
The park divides into three main areas, each with a different character:
Main Camp area (eastern Hwange): Most accessible, closest to the Bulawayo–Victoria Falls railway and the small Hwange town. The Zimbabwe Parks national camp and most mid-range options are here. Best for self-drive visitors or those on a tighter budget.
Sinamatella area (north-central Hwange): More remote, accessed via gravel roads, and with some of the best wildlife density in the park. National park chalets here are often overlooked and offer remarkable value.
Robins/Nantwich area (northern Hwange): The most remote section, harder to reach but very quiet. Mostly bush camping and a few national park facilities.
The private concessions bordering the park — Linkwasha, Somalisa, and others — offer the most exclusive and expensive experience, with no other vehicles competing for sightings.
National Park Camps (USD 15–80 per night)
Main Camp is the headquarters of Hwange National Park and the starting point for most self-drive visitors. Accommodation ranges from basic chalets (USD 20–30 per night, self-catering) to slightly more comfortable safari units. The waterhole visible from the camp — Hyde’s Hide — is one of the most reliable elephant spots in Africa. Thousands of elephants have been documented here during September–October. Sinamatella Camp sits on a hilltop in northern Hwange with panoramic views over a shallow valley. The national park chalets here (approximately USD 25–45 per night) have some of the best natural settings of any camp in the park — elephant and predator activity around the Sinamatella waterhole is excellent, and the camp feels genuinely remote. The drive from the main gate takes about 2 hours on gravel.
Robins Camp (northern Hwange) is the most rustic of the main national park camps: basic facilities, no luxury pretensions, and genuinely wild surroundings. Suitable for self-sufficient travellers only. From approximately USD 15 per night.
Mid-Range Private Camps (USD 150–350 per person per night)
Miombo Safaris Camp on the eastern boundary of Hwange offers a classic tented camp experience at rates that undercut the exclusive-use lodges significantly. Approximately USD 180–250 per person per night (all-inclusive: meals, activities, park fees) as of 2026. Six tents on a private concession, walking safaris, vehicle game drives, and night drives included. The owner-guides have decades of Hwange experience.
Nehimba Lodge sits on a private concession in the interior of Hwange and is often cited as the best value in the mid-range bracket. Nine tents clustered around a busy waterhole. All-inclusive rates approximately USD 250–320 per person per night as of 2026. Strong lion and wild dog sightings on record.
Elephants Eye Lodge on the Tsholotsho concession (western Hwange) focuses on elephant-oriented guiding and has a dedicated waterhole with good late-afternoon light. Rates approximately USD 200–280 per person per night. Walking with habituated elephant bulls is a signature experience here.
Luxury Camps (USD 450–900+ per person per night)
Linkwasha Camp (Wilderness Safaris) on the Linkwasha concession in south-central Hwange is consistently rated among the top five camps in Zimbabwe. The tented accommodation is beautiful, the waterhole in front of camp is spectacular, and the guiding team is among the best in the park. All-inclusive rates approximately USD 650–850 per person per night as of 2026. The Linkwasha airstrip makes access from Victoria Falls straightforward — a 30–40 minute light aircraft flight.
Little Makololo Camp (Wilderness Safaris) on the same concession as Linkwasha is smaller (six tents) and has an even more intimate feel. Often used as a combination with Linkwasha for multi-night Hwange itineraries. Similar pricing.
Somalisa Camp and Somalisa Acacia (African Bush Camps) on the Somalisa concession in eastern Hwange are both well-regarded. Somalisa Acacia is the slightly more exclusive of the two. The tree hide at Somalisa — a platform overlooking a waterhole — is one of the signature game-viewing experiences in all of Hwange.
Camelthorn Lodge near the Hwange national park boundary is privately owned and offers a slightly different style — more of a permanent lodge than a tented camp — at rates from approximately USD 400–550 per person per night all-inclusive. Family-friendly with larger rooms than most tented camps.
Choosing the Right Camp
For elephant enthusiasts: Main Camp (Hyde’s Hide), Linkwasha, or Somalisa during September–October. Nowhere in Africa offers comparable dry-season elephant aggregations.
For wild dog: Hwange has one of Africa’s most reliable wild dog populations. The Linkwasha and Somalisa concessions record more sightings than the national park camps. Ask your operator about recent dog activity when booking.
For value: Sinamatella national park camp or Miombo Safaris — genuine Hwange wildlife at a fraction of the luxury prices.
For walking: Miombo Safaris and Elephants Eye prioritise walking safaris. The Wilderness Safaris camps also offer walking but vehicle drives tend to dominate the programme.
