Zimbabwe in April: Weather, Wildlife and What to Expect
April is when Zimbabwe shifts gears. The rains stop, the air clears and the country enters what many experienced safari-goers consider the ideal shoulder season. Victoria Falls thunders at or near its maximum flow. The bush is still green and lush, but animals become progressively easier to spot as water sources start to shrink. Lodge prices have not yet hit peak season levels, making April one of the smartest months to visit.
Weather in April
The transition from wet to dry is dramatic in April. Early in the month, you might catch the last scattered showers, but by mid-April, rain essentially stops across most of the country. Days are warm and sunny, while evenings cool down noticeably - particularly on the highveld plateau around Harare and Nyanga, where temperatures can drop below 10 degrees Celsius at night.
| City | Avg High °C | Avg Low °C | Rain Days | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harare | 26 | 13 | 4 | Warm days, cool nights, drying out |
| Bulawayo | 27 | 13 | 3 | Pleasant, clear skies |
| Victoria Falls | 29 | 15 | 4 | Warm, falls at peak spray |
| Masvingo | 27 | 13 | 3 | Clear, cooling evenings |
Victoria Falls Water Levels
April is when Victoria Falls delivers one of the great natural spectacles on the planet. The Zambezi is at or approaching peak flow, sending approximately 500 million litres per minute over the basalt lip. The spray column rises hundreds of metres into the sky and can soak you from 500 metres away. Photography from the eastern viewpoints (points 7-16 on the Rainforest Walk) is essentially impossible without waterproof protection - you will be drenched. The best views in April come from the western end near the Devil’s Cataract and from the Zimbabwe side lookout, where you can see the full width of the falls from a distance.
Helicopter and microlight flights over the falls (“Flight of Angels”) are at their most spectacular during April.
Safari and Wildlife
April marks a significant improvement in game viewing conditions. As surface water from the rains begins to evaporate and the bush starts to thin, animals are increasingly drawn to permanent water sources. This concentration effect builds steadily through the month.
What to expect in April:
- Predator sightings improve - Lions, leopards and wild dogs become more visible as the grass dries and shortens. Hwange National Park begins its transition into prime viewing territory
- Birdlife peaks - Migratory and resident species overlap in April, creating one of the highest species counts of the year. Keen birders can log 200+ species in a week
- Elephant herds - Still spread across the landscape with good water availability, making for relaxed, natural sightings. The frantic dry-season competition at waterholes has not yet begun
- Walking safaris resume - Camps in Mana Pools that closed during the rains begin reopening, including some of the finest walking safari operations in Africa
Most roads in national parks are passable again by mid-April, though a 4x4 is still recommended for Hwange’s interior tracks. Browse current Zimbabwe tours on GetYourGuide — many specialist operators run shoulder-season packages that offer excellent value in April.
Events and Festivals
- Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) - Held annually in Bulawayo at the ZITF exhibition grounds, usually in late April. It is Zimbabwe’s premier trade and investment show, with public exhibition days featuring Zimbabwean crafts, food stalls and cultural performances
- Victoria Falls Marathon training events - Organised group runs along the Zambezi in preparation for the full marathon later in the year, departing from the Victoria Falls Parkway
Where to Stay and Eat
Victoria Falls: The Victoria Falls Safari Lodge overlooks a waterhole frequented by elephants and buffalo, with rooms from approximately USD 200 per night during the shoulder season (as of 2026). The Boma restaurant at the lodge complex serves a legendary dinner experience with traditional dishes, drum performances and game meats (approximately USD 45 per person).
Nyanga: Montclair Hotel and Casino in the Nyanga highlands offers a cool retreat from lowveld heat, with rooms from approximately USD 80 per night. The hotel restaurant serves trout freshly caught from the Nyanga mountain streams (mains from approximately USD 12 as of 2026).
What to Pack
April’s split personality - warm days, cool nights - requires thoughtful layering:
- Lightweight, neutral-coloured safari clothing for daytime
- A warm fleece or down jacket for early morning game drives and cool evenings
- A waterproof jacket specifically for visiting Victoria Falls - the spray in April is intense
- Long trousers and closed shoes for walking safaris
- Binoculars - game viewing improves significantly through the month
- A camera with a good zoom lens - light conditions in April are excellent for photography
- Sunscreen and lip balm - the dry air sets in quickly
- Light insect repellent - malaria risk drops compared to the wet months but has not disappeared
Budget Considerations
April sits in the shoulder season, which means you get near-peak conditions at below-peak prices. Expect to pay 15-25% less than July-August rates at most lodges. Availability is generally good but starts to tighten for popular properties in Hwange and Mana Pools. Booking at least six weeks ahead is wise for April.
Arrange travel insurance before departure — medical evacuation cover is essential for any safari trip, and April’s improving but still-variable roads make remote-area coverage worth having.
