Zimbabwe in July: Weather, Wildlife and What to Expect
July is the heart of Zimbabwe’s peak safari season and the most popular month for international visitors. The combination of cold nights, warm days, minimal vegetation and shrinking water sources creates ideal conditions for wildlife viewing. Every major national park is operating at full capacity, and the quality of game sightings across Hwange, Mana Pools and Matobo Hills is among the best in all of Africa.
Weather in July
July is Zimbabwe’s coldest month. Mornings and evenings are genuinely cold, particularly on the highveld and in open safari vehicles at dawn. Frost is common in Harare, Nyanga and even parts of Hwange. By mid-morning the chill burns off, and afternoons are bright, warm and cloudless. There is no rain to speak of anywhere in the country.
| City | Avg High °C | Avg Low °C | Rain Days | Conditions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Harare | 21 | 5 | 0 | Cold mornings, warm afternoons |
| Bulawayo | 22 | 6 | 0 | Cool, dry, clear |
| Victoria Falls | 25 | 7 | 0 | Pleasant, falls still flowing |
| Masvingo | 22 | 6 | 0 | Cold nights, sunny days |
Victoria Falls Water Levels
Victoria Falls flow has noticeably decreased from the April peak but remains impressive in July. The western sections of the falls still carry strong water, while the eastern sections start to show exposed rock face. This reduction in flow actually offers better photographic conditions - you can see the falls’ full structure, dramatic rainbow arcs form in the spray, and the Rainforest Walk is walkable without getting soaked. The classic postcard view of the falls with both water and exposed cliff face is best captured in July.
Safari and Wildlife
July delivers what many consider the finest game viewing in southern Africa. Water is scarce, grass is short and golden, trees are bare, and animals have no choice but to congregate at the few remaining water sources.
July wildlife highlights:
- Hwange waterhole theatre - The pans at Hwange draw staggering numbers. It is not uncommon to witness 300+ elephants at a single waterhole at dusk, alongside zebra, wildebeest, giraffe, sable antelope and their predators. Camps like Somalisa and Linkwasha offer front-row seats
- Mana Pools magic - Mana Pools in July is extraordinary. The Zambezi’s pools shrink, concentrating hippos, crocodiles and elephants. Walking amongst elephants on the dry floodplain is a defining Zimbabwe experience
- Big cat sightings - Lion prides in Hwange become highly visible as they patrol waterholes waiting for prey. Leopards at Matobo Hills are regularly spotted on late afternoon drives among the granite kopjes
- Wild dog hunts - Painted wolf packs are extremely active in July, hunting twice daily to feed growing pups at den sites. Hwange’s Painted Dog Conservation project offers guided tracking
Malaria risk is at its lowest in July, though prophylaxis is still recommended for the Zambezi valley and Victoria Falls area. Browse current Zimbabwe tours on GetYourGuide and book early — July is high season and the best operators fill months in advance.
Events and Festivals
- Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) - One of Africa’s premier arts festivals, typically held in late April or May, but July sees related gallery exhibitions continuing at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe on Julius Nyerere Way, Harare
- Bulawayo cultural tours - The Amagugu International Heritage Centre in Matobo runs guided cultural experiences during peak tourist season, including Ndebele village visits and traditional cooking sessions
Where to Stay and Eat
Hwange: Somalisa Camp in the Hwange concession area is one of Zimbabwe’s most acclaimed safari camps, with all-inclusive rates from approximately USD 650 per person per night during peak season (as of 2026). The camp sits in a private concession with exclusive traversing rights, and the guiding is exceptional.
Victoria Falls: The Victoria Falls Hotel, built in 1904, is the grand dame of Zimbabwean hospitality. Rooms start from approximately USD 280 per night in July (as of 2026). Take afternoon tea on the terrace overlooking the gorge bridge for one of Zimbabwe’s most iconic views. For a more casual meal, Dusty Road cocktail bar and restaurant near the craft market serves smoked crocodile tacos and craft cocktails (mains from approximately USD 16).
What to Pack
July is the coldest month - do not underestimate the morning chill:
- A proper down jacket or insulated puffer - essential for 5am game drives
- Thermal base layers (top and bottom)
- Gloves, a warm beanie and a scarf or buff
- Long trousers for all bush activities
- A warm fleece for evening campfire sessions
- Lighter T-shirts and a sun hat for warm afternoons
- Neutral-coloured clothing for game drives (avoid bright white and blue)
- Binoculars - this is the month when you will use them constantly
- A camera with a telephoto lens (200mm minimum, 400mm ideal)
- Moisturiser and lip balm for dry, cold air
- No rain gear needed
Budget Considerations
July is high season and prices reflect it. Premium safari camps charge their maximum rates and book out months in advance - six months is not too early for popular properties in Hwange and Mana Pools. Victoria Falls town has a broader range, from the Shoestrings Backpackers at approximately USD 20 per dorm bed to luxury lodges exceeding USD 500 per night. Internal flights between Harare, Bulawayo and Victoria Falls should be booked well ahead. Park entry fees remain at approximately USD 15 per person per day for international visitors (as of 2026).
Arrange travel insurance before departure — comprehensive cover including medical evacuation is essential, particularly when staying at remote bush camps far from the nearest hospital.
